Einer nach dem anderen werden die Mieter des altehrwürdigen Lusman Buildings auf höchst kuriose Weise dezimiert. Ob in grobe Teile zerlegt oder in kleinste Bestandteile zerhäckselt: getreu dem Filmtitel bedient sich der Mörder aus einer gut sortierten Werkzeugkiste. Da treibt es den entsetzten Opfern schon mal den Schlagbohrer ins Hirn oder es gräbt sich die Flex tief hinein in die allerletzte Gedärmwindung.

Wer (oder was) verbirgt sich wohl hinter dieser blinden Zerstörungswut? Schleicht etwa ein profilneurotischer Handwerker die dunklen Flure entlang? Will sich ein mürrischer Mitmieter an der Hausgemeinschaft rächen? Oder handelt es sich um einen durchgeknallten Leatherface-Fan, der nun selbst zur Kettensäge greift?

Es scheint, als habe Grandmaster des Horrors himself, Tobe Hooper (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE) zurückgefunden zu den mehr archaischen Auswüchsen des Grauens. Dabei gelingt es ihm ohne viel CGI Protzerei, aber mit der wundervollen Angela Bettis (MAY) im Cast, für einiges qualvolle Gruseln zu sorgen.

In der Tradition der 70er Exploitationwelle lädt Hoopers Griff in die Toolbox zu einem deftigen Splatterreigen ein, wobei für den erfahrenen Genrefan der Spaß- bzw. Zynismusfaktor angesichts übertrieben großer Zangen und ähnlicher Regieeinfälle im Vordergrund stehen dürfte.

Now with his new film Toolbox Murders (a remake of the 1978 cult favorite in name only), Hooper has delivered his strongest, most atmospheric work in many years, a straightforward, old-school slasher film with a unique supernatural angle, a gifted cast, and a healthy dose of satirical wit—not to mention a more than healthy amount of on-screen bloodshed. Angela Bettis (May) delivers a richly textured performance as Nell, who has just moved with her husband to a crumbling, creepy old apartment building in Hollywood. If the bad plumbing, sleazy landlords, and eccentric neighbors aren’t enough, the building has other problems—namely a masked killer wandering the apartments, dispatching tenants with nail guns, power drills and hammers. Nell investigates the disappearances, and soon finds that the identity of the killer is linked to something sinister buried deep within the walls of the building itself. Stylish in approach and grisly in execution, Toolbox Murders lives up to the nastiness inherent in its title. Hooper has delivered a satisfyingly scary thrill ride for genre fans, with some genuinely harrowing murder sequences and a stellar performance from Bettis in the leading role.
